This striking mid-century Scandinavian art-glass bowl is hand-blown in richly pigmented cobalt blue that fades gradually to clear at the base. Formed from a single gather of glass, the bowlâs domed base rises fluidly into the body, creating a seamless and beautifully weighted profile. The softly ruffled rim and impressive 1.47 kg mass give it a sculptural, centre-piece presence that catches and diffuses the light superbly.
The form, colour chemistry, and integral base are most closely associated with Finnish production by RiihimĂ€en Lasi in the early 1970s, particularly the work of Tamara Aladin, whose heavy cobalt pieces share the same tone and construction. Although unsigned, all technical and stylistic evidence strongly indicates a Scandinavian â and likely Finnish â origin.
đȘ¶ Comparative note:
An almost identical base profile appears on certain Holmegaard designs by Per LĂŒtken (such as the Akva and Thule series). However, Holmegaard examples tend to be lighter, with fully polished pontils and uniform blue colouring. The greater weight, fire-smoothed base, and subtle cobalt-to-clear fade seen here are distinctive traits of Finnish craftsmanship rather than Danish.
A superb and substantial piece of northern European glass artistry â equally at home in a curated Scandinavian interior or a serious collectorâs display.
