This a small Victorian hand-blown clear glass bottle with an applied rim. Probably used in a kitchen to hold oils or vinegar, a cloth cap would have been placed over the top and then secured with twine under the applied rim.

The slight tint to the glass is a sure sign of age and caused by iron impurities in the manufacturing process. The bottle is slightly waisted and the pontil mark has been ground smooth. These features all point to a bottle produced in about the middle of the 19th century... circa 1850s.

This little bottle is charming, beautiful, dramtic and the ultimate in upcycling. Today it would make the most attractive and interesting of posy vases....
